Mohole

Postby bbeeton » Tue Jun 06, 2023 5:45 pm

The Mohole was originally an effort to drill down to the Mohorovičić discontinuity, the boundary between the Earth's crust and the mantle (not "mantel"!), during the International Geophysical Year (July 1, 1957 -- December 31, 1958), in order to better understand the geological structure of the Earth's upper layers. After drilling only about 600 ft (under 11,700 ft of water), the project was abandoned, largely on account of bureaucratic snafus. (John Steinbeck was on board the drilling ship to report the undertaking.)

But a more recent expedition, this time drilling at a more favorable location along the mid-Atlantic ridge, has succeeded, as reported to non-specialists in the Washington Post:

They're not calling this a Mohole, but that's essentially what it is. Hooray for the Mohole!

Not sure this one will catch on, but I can see it being used in the sense of 'down the rabbit hole'.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
