FREELANCE

Postby tcward » Thu May 20, 2010 11:21 am

I suggest 'freelance' as an interesting WoTD.

I became re-interested in this word through an advertisement for a website that outsources professionals, called elance.com... The website name made me think of some medical site rather than a 'find work' website, but after I realized what they were going after -- reminding the listener of the word 'freelance' -- it made sense.

According to www.etymonline.com:
also free lance, free-lance, "medieval mercenary warrior," 1820, from free + lance; apparently a coinage of Sir Walter Scott's. Figurative sense is from 1864; specifically of journalism by 1882. Related: Freelancer. The verb is first attested 1903.
These days probably there is a higher percentage of freelancers out there...

Welcome back.

Tim, good to have you back. Yes, there are far more free lances these days, sigh :?

Seeing as I am a recent graduate in International Relations, with a certificate in "Security" studies, I'm ashamed to admit I missed this tie in. Free Lances = Mercenaries = Private Military Companies/Contractors (Armies for hire in contemporary speak).

Silly me.

Glad for the new post!

Some aren't freelancers by choice today, either.

Pay can be good, the boss is great, but the benefits lack a bit...

So many clients seem to be 'confused' by the freelance part...

:?
