Manqué

Postby William Hupy » Thu Jan 22, 2015 11:28 am

I just ran across this word and have decided generously to share it with all of you. The origin is PIE "man-ko" meaning maimed in the hand. Its current iteration refers to a person who has failed to live up to expectations.

Without the accent, it's the numbers 1-18 in roulette, and no, this isn't the fancy French way of spelling manky.

I wonder if you could call someone a human manqué. I can think of a few examples. I guess I'll stick with calling them manky, though. At least they are related, via the sense of lacking.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
