Tumbril

Postby William Hupy » Tue Dec 15, 2015 12:45 am

Apparently this word comes directly to us from French, tombar, meaning to fall, which why it was used as a dung cart and also to transport prisoners to the guillotin. Does anyone see a PIE origin here?

I wonder if the usual spelling, tumbrel, would help me stop seeing this as another word for a tumble-weed. I also get an image of gentle hills from this one. Weird, no? :? Could it be because one tumbles down hills?
