introvert and taciturn

Postby uncronopio » Mon Nov 07, 2005 9:30 pm

I was reading Caring for your introvert in an old issue of The Atlantic Online, when I decided to go for the lazy option: suggest two words that appear in the article and that are somewhat related.

Answers.com defines introvert as:
Verb.
1. To turn or direct inward.
2. Psychology. To concentrate (one's interests) upon oneself.
3. Medicine. To turn (a tubular organ or part) inward upon itself.

Noun.
1. Psychology. An introverted person.
2. Medicine. An anatomical structure that is capable of being introverted.

INTRO– + Latin vertere, to turn.
While Taciturn is:
Adj.

Habitually untalkative. See synonyms at silent.

[French taciturne, from Old French, from Latin taciturnus, from tacitus, silent. See tacit.]
"Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest." -- Mark Twain

Half done:

How well does introvert really fit into our word list, though? It's a good one, but not all that easy to do much with. Too blunt, perhaps?
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

I love the word "laconic', and using the word "tacit" or
'taciturn' always raised eyebrows from some of the
unlearned, (which is about everyone in some circles).
It is ironic, no, that Tacitus was "the silent one".
I remember studying him in Latin classes as a boy.
