Civil
The famous oxymoron Civil War brings to mind the contradiction of how can any war be civil, in other words, courteous and polite? That is, unless one knows the origin of the word civil, which has to do with the internal affairs of a state. Is this because Romans required those engaged in public affairs to be courteous to one another?
