It appears this word comes to us directly from Latin, profusus, meaning to spread out, lavish, which, in turn, received it from the PIE root, PER, forward + fundere.

Several of the -fuse words are covered in the discussion of suffuse, but this one has a different feel to it. Especially with the tie-in to apologies, the fact that the stress is on the ultima, and that it's an adjective while the others are verbs.
