Good Word, and Books

Postby jaa67 » Thu Dec 14, 2017 2:39 pm

Greetings—I have long been reading the daily good words, but have not taken part before. Often I have thought of a word I'd like to see, only to lose it before I could get to my computer. This time I made it!
Dawdle
I am a neophyte at searching for words and their backgrounds, and only found a bit from my searches; but what I found sounded interesting. Related to 'Daw,' a bird? Does the 'l' relate to continuation, as in sizzle?

I also enjoy many of the recreational links here. Under "Books That Should Be Written," may I suggest:
Avoiding Thirst, by Phillip D. Glass
and
Planning an Amorous Adventure, by Sam and Janet Evening

Thanks for all you provide in education and entertainment!

Welcome to the Agora! Great word and book suggestions.

Here's what my favorite etymology site has to say on dawdle:
1650s, perhaps a variant of daddle "to walk unsteadily." Perhaps influenced by daw, because the bird was regarded as sluggish and silly. Not in general use until c. 1775.
Maybe the Doctor can come up with more.

Hope to see more from you!
