Heel, Heeling

Postby call_copse » Tue Aug 28, 2018 6:46 am

I've always wondered why sailing boats heel rather than tip, tilt or lean. Heel, otherwise is associated with controlling a dog or mending shoes...

I just took a gander and learned that this shipshape version of heel is from a different root, ME hield, which meant to tip, slope, or incline.
