Morass

This under-used and rather nice word whose meaning, a messy confusion, presumably has been derived from its other meaning of bog or marsh. But what is confusing about a bog? How did it get all the way to general confusion?

Apropos of nothing, this word always reminds me of Marillion and their certainly pretentious lyric to Incubus:

'Sentenced to rejection in the morass of anonymity'

Must mean sometnig. I kind of like the song mind you.

Well I have never heard of them before. I'm not much into music of this sort. I read the lyrics and I'm afraid I had no idea what it was on about. But watching a Youtube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qk2soZPEFIs
in which the lead bloke explains that it is all about the perils of taking pornographic polaroids, hasn't helped either.

Not sure I am going to be converted to the music. I expect it's very nice!

But frankly the whole thing is just a morass of sounds and words to me.

Interesting though.

Hey, they were big when I was little. I don't listen to them now. This song is good though and may help explain their popularity at the time, in a morass of new wave types:
