Interesting that this word meaning shoulder patches in uniforms, come from the French word for shoulder, which came from the Latin spatula, for flat piece of wood.

Related to epee, even though at root it meant a broad sword, which an epee is most definitely not.
It makes sense that it's related to spade, though.
