Fetid

Postby William Hupy » Sat Jun 08, 2019 8:00 am

This appears to be Germanic in origin, but is not. From Latin.

We have to be careful with this one. Don't get confused and misspell feted. :D

I see this word and think of two botanical items.

1. Skunk cabbage (Symplocarus foetidus), which is one of the first plants to be observed growing in Spring, since it generates enough heat to melt snow.

2. Asafetida (Asafoetida), a staple spice of Indian cooking, but first encountered by me in a small grocery store catering to a Portuguese neighborhood in Providence, RI. The ground dried sap from the roots of Ferula asafoetida, it also has uses in traditional Indian medicine.

Both of these are characterized by a pungent aroma.

Fascinating, I never knew either factlet. The skunk cabbage one is cool. Neat, that is, not less than warm, as it's actually above freezing. :D
