From French, toupet, who received it from German, topf, meaning tuft of hair, which also gave us top.

And presumably no relation to topiary - which is really all about hair-dos for hedges.

Topiary is related to another kind of word, though. If your topiary comes out poorly, you might call it dystopian. :)
