The Facts on Fact

Postby Slava » Tue Oct 09, 2012 9:07 pm

A rather entertaining column in The Atlantic, on the use of the word fact.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

Actually, I literally used the phrase "as a matter of fact" in my callow youth.

Actually a true fact is one that shows a one to one correspondence with reality and is verifiable. Science is filled with demonstrable facts that can be checked by repeatble experiments. When one leaves that field for another realm, say politics, the match to reality may well be distorted, thus the proliferation of fact checking. In fact, that's a whole new booming industry that sometimes results in clarity, but more often in obfuscation!

mwtzzz: Thats true, but David is right; its normally placed before the noun. For some of us, "la semana prуxima" may sound a bit strange.

byrohic, I am confused. To what does your post refer? To what does "that" refer? Who is David? "Fact" is already a noun so "its [sic] normally placed before a noun" doesn't make sense to me. Your statement suggests "it" refers to an adjective, not a noun. Please clarify: To what does "it" refer? I'm not thoroughly familiar with Twitter memes and the like, so would you please provide us with spelled-out version of "mwtzzz"?

As a matter of fact, I am also factually confused about your posting byronhic. Please clarify. I am sure you can and I prize you as a member of the Agora.
