Northern Spy

This is a variety of apple. But I haven't found out why it is called "spy". No one at my local orchard company had a clue, and I couldn't come up with anything on the internet.

A tad recondite, I know, but perhaps someone can help me find the answer. :?:

Since the northern spy apple is also called northern spie and northern pie, I suggest it may be a corruption of pie. They are pie apples.
