Agora Closed Temporarily because of Technical Difficulties

Postby Dr. Goodword » Fri Jul 28, 2006 10:59 pm

The Alpha Agora was closed for several hours today because of an overload caused by a faulty RSS feed. We have resolved the problem so that it should not recur.

We are sorry for the inconvenience. Things should go smoothly again now.

Hi everybody,

The problem was because we were getting too many hits to the rss feed for the Agora. The rss.php script dynamically builds the feed every time it's requested, which hammers the database. I'm going to work on a method where it will save the feed every 5 minutes or so, and just hand that static file off quickly to anybody who requests it. Unfortunately, this will require some development on my part, and the RSS feature will have to be down until further notice.

Thanks,

Andrew

RSS Feed is back up

Hi,

I've updated the RSS feed so that it's served as a static file that's updated every 10 minutes, which should keep our server from bursting into flames. Let me know if there are any problems.

Another site, but, alas one not currently needed.
But a post from Andrew the Board God, as stargazer
