Uncommonly Appropriate Partnerships

Postby Dr. Goodword » Mon Mar 12, 2007 11:01 pm

We are about to link a new page with uncommonly appropriate business partnerships, like our old Cook, Book, and Hyde Accountants. There are many, many more we just haven't thought up. Suggestions, as always, are encouraged.

Of course my favorite is the fictional Dewey, Cheatham & Howe law firm from the Car Talk brothers, Click and Clack.

I remember seeing that firm on a Three Stooges episode, so it dates back a ways.

I found another company reference, dating from 1964, at Wikipedia today in the entry on Blivet:
Paradoxical graphic figure

Image

In yet another usage, illustrated above, the blivet is an undecipherable figure. It appeared on the March 1965 cover of Mad magazine, where it was dubbed the poiuyt (the last six letters on the top row of the typewriter keyboard, right to left), and has appeared numerous times since then. An anonymously-contributed version described as a hole location gauge was printed in the June 1964 issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact, with the comment that "this outrageous piece of draftsmanship evidently escaped from the Finagle & Diddle Engineering Works".
Yes, yes, I know a blivet, or blibbet, is 10 pounds of , uh, "stuff" in a 5 pound bag, but this device was also referenced in the article, and I chose it for the mythical engineering firm.

What paradox? The entire figure is 2 dimensional. Just as this is not a pipe.

Along the lines of partnership names: Leaven and Earth bakery

Along the lines of This Is Not A Pipe: Marcel Duchamp's version of Mona Lisa

Along the lines of inappropriate partnership names--there was a business in Santa Rosa, CA in the early 1980s called "Bottles and Bolts". It was a combination hardware store/liquor store. Sounds like a dangerous combination.

"This is not a pipe" reminds me of the sign--"Do Not Read This Sign"...

A list of well-named partnerships should include Engulf & Devour, courtesy of Mel Brooks' Silent Movie.

So of course Wikipedia has a page on Dewey, Cheatham & Howe. They include a variation: Howe, Dewey, Cheatem and Wynn.
In a set of legal forms published for lawyers and other legal professionals, one fictitiious law-firm name is "Skrewer, Widow & Children."

Also, from the Wikipedia List of Fictional Law Firms:
Hackey, Joake & Dunnit from The Simpsons

Luvem and Burnem Family Law - from The Simpsons

Sebben & Sebben from Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law

Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel, radio vehicle for the Marx Brothers in the 1930s

Roper, Bender & Raper from Frank Zappa's Thing-Fish

Sue, Grabbit & Runne, featured regularly in Private Eye magazine
There is also a complete list of CarTalk gag credits.

Thanks for the donations. Some of these are great and I'll add them next week.

Dewey, Cheatham & Howe goes back at least a century in Jolly Old.
