This word is obviously made up of two: heir and loom. My dictionary says that it is Middle English, but is ambiguous about its original meaning. Taken separately, both heir and loom are Middle English, with the latter meaning "tool."
Yep, one can sure learn something new everyday. I just found out that loom meant penis for some 200 years. Tool, indeed!
