Pit

Postby mnichols0 » Wed Aug 10, 2022 10:05 am

Pit has a myriad of definitions in the dictionary, from a hole in the ground to the stone of a fruit. It can be either a noun or a verb - or in slang, an adjective ("my job is the pits"). My dictionary gives only the Old English basis for the noun and a borrowing from Dutch for the verb. A curious chameleon of a word!

Mr Nichols, welcome aboard. May I suggest you post your suggestion for a word to examine in the Good Word Suggestion section? The Good Doctor has said he does not often visit this portion of the website and, therefore, it is unlikely he will see your suggestion anytime soon.
