Ironic Misapprehension

Postby brogine » Sun May 02, 2021 3:33 pm

I don’t think I ever posted this.
Years ago, I transcribed the following from a BBC news program on NPR:

“ . . . was expelled for ‘activities incompatible with diplomatic status,’ often shorthand for ‘spying.’

I've seen something similar, about injuries being "incompatible with life."
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

This makes me think of the expression 'uncalled for'.

"I know the service was slow, but throwing a fork at the waiter was uncalled for." As if the person had been under the misapprehension that it was called for (i.e. required).
