Booker T. Washington

Postby sardith » Tue Apr 05, 2011 11:07 am

Hello~

Today is Booker T. Washington's birthday, and he said something that I find thought provoking, and so I share:

"We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary."

Any thoughts?

Sardith :)

I worked with someone who used this as his signature/tag for a while. Great quote.

A counter-argument, though; is English mugging other languages, or are certain of their words insinuating themselves into English?

And the ultimate question, are we headed for an eventual universal language?
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
