Leroy Anderson wrote a musical composition called "The Typewriter". It is quite a lively piece with a manual typewriter being used as one of the musical instruments. The keys on a manual typewriter do not make distinctive sounds, but one surely needs to know where the C key is. A beginning piano student is first taught to find middle C on the piano. Perhaps this quotation is intended as a humorous comparison of a typewriter with a keyboard instrument. Or perhaps not.

I quote from the 1983 Banished Archives: "Highway User Fee - Bruce Peasley, Handy High School instructor, Bay City, Mich., say means "gasoline tax."

Does highway user fee mean gasoline tax or toll road fees? If you examine gasoline tax expenditures they are not all used for building and maintaining highways. Much of this money is siphoned off for public transportation and other projects felt worthy by those in charge. On the other hand, the money from toll fees often winds up in the pockets of corrupt politicians via offshore "management" companies. We are getting ripped off folks!

Did you ever drive in Denver, Colorado? Stay there a week and drive the roads. You frequently do not know if you are driving on a toll road. Then watch the bill come in. You will be astounded.

The good folks of Colin County, Texas, (just north of Dallas) have the good sense to shout loudly, "No more toll roads!"

Solution: Banish all toll roads, special occupancy lanes and etc. Used all the gasoline taxes for road building and maintenance. Use only the gasoline taxes for road building and maintenance. This will cause gasoline taxes to go up steeply, but someone, namely the driving public, has to pay for it.

Years ago KY built a toll road south to perhaps Bowling Green from L'ville. Eventually, the road was paid off, and the Interstate became free. I remember wishing LA would do that to speed our interstate construction.
