Group Poem XXI - Yes, Mrs. P

Postby saparris » Mon May 04, 2015 6:45 pm

Group Poem XXI will be (I hope) a humorous poem called “Yes, Mrs. P”

The poem will be written as a conversation between two individuals: a male and a female. The topic of their conversation will be whether a female should be elected President of the United States. The man is against the idea; the woman is for it. The first two lines of each stanza will be a comment by the man, and the next two will take by the woman. This alternating pattern will continue throughout each stanza. Contributors, as always, will post only one line at a time.

The poem will consist of 5 stanzas of four lines each—all written in iambic heptameter (seven stressed syllables, each preceded by an unstressed one). The rhyme scheme will be ABAB CDCD, EFEF, GHGH, IJIJ.

An example is:

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.

Before posting, copy the entire poem as it stands, paste it into your reply, and then add your new line.

The title and first line are as follows:

Yes, Mrs. P
But she would have a problem from day one: “First Man” won’t do!

Yes, Mrs. P
But she would have a problem from day one: “First Man” won’t do!
"First Lady" means a consort, and "First Woman" sounds like Eve.

Yet the next line is from the male, so he's complaining about what the female President's mate is to be called. First Dude is already taken, by Mr. Sarah Palin. First Gentleman, the logical corollary to First Lady, somehow just doesn't work. And what if the female President is a lesbian, or single? (The same, except for a word, goes for any male homosexual.)

Even First Husband doesn't work, as that implies there is at least a Second.

I'm looking forward to seeing where this one goes. I do hope I can come up with something to add, though given my feeble poetic skills that's highly unlikely.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

It barely matters what he’s called—or was called hitherto

Sorry – I was confused. :?

Can you suggest an alternative second line?

OK, here are the first three lines with my new second line:

Yes, Mrs. P
But she would have a problem from day one: “First Man” won’t do
To designate her consort, and "First Gentleman"'s absurd!
It barely matters what he's called—or was called hitherto.

It has been agreed to add 'He' and 'She' to identify the speaker clearly.

Yes, Mrs. P
[He]
But she would have a problem from day one: “First Man” won’t do
To designate her consort, and "First Gentleman"'s absurd!
[She]
It barely matters what he's called—or was called hitherto.
I'd happily accept whatever title he preferred.

Of course you would—as long as Madame Wifey wins the vote!
