Sorry

Postby Perry Lassiter » Sat Feb 27, 2016 3:13 pm

Here is an article about the word sorry and whether British use it more than Americans. However, what I was most interested in or the shades of meaning or connotations. As a former Philosophy major with a seminar in semantics, such things fascinate me. I note also the word degenerates in slang to mean inept, or perhaps no good, as in 'a sorry individual'. Personally, I find it easy to apologize to restore a relationship or get past an awkwardness even if I'm sure I'm innocent and they're the culprit. Some of what happens in the article, such as bumping into people and one muttering "sorry," could be classified as ceremonial language, as usually is "how are you."
