I've read from more than one source that France wasn't very French, linguistically speaking, before the twentieth century. I find it interesting that Napoleon Bonaparte, who pushed a French-only policy pretty hard, was himseld Corsican. The man born Napuleon di Buonaparte had to learn French himself, or at least learn to sound less "country." In more recent years, the job of keeping France's media and schools French belonged to a man with the quintessentially French name of Jack Lang.
