Pharoah

Postby William Hupy » Sun Apr 30, 2017 9:14 am

Today I read an editorial that described the current occupant of The White House's quest for a southern wall as pharaonic and moronic. This is probably one of few words to sneak into English from Egyptian, but indirectly.

pharaoh
title of the kings of ancient Egypt, Old English Pharon, from Latin Pharaonem, from Greek Pharao, from Hebrew Par'oh, from Egyptian Pero', literally "great house."

A dictionary I looked at also adds the sense of excessively large and/or luxurious. That reminded me of gigantomania, especially the architecture of the Soviet Union.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
