Dire

Postby William Hupy » Mon May 08, 2017 10:16 pm

Probably from Greek. Does anyone use this other than in conjunction with consequences and circumstances?

Aside from the band name, dire is often found in conjunction with 'straights' around these parts. Though, it may be that straits is more accurate as 'strait' would be used by sailors encountering a narrow and troublesome passage.

I suppose it is a circumstance, but need often follows dire.

I think we could get away with "in dire health," too.
