Rudolph was borrowed from German Rudolf, from Old High German Hrodulf, literally "fame-wolf," from hruod- "fame, glory" + wolf.
Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer first appeared in a 1939 booklet written by Robert L. May and published by Montgomery Ward, the department store. The story is owned by The Rudolph Company, LP and has been adapted into numerous forms including the song by Johnny Marks.
I first heard the song as a child on a visit to the Montgomery Wards department store (which mama always called "Monkey Wards"), first sung by popular Hollywood cowboy, Gene Autry.
