(in ethology) the world as it is experienced by a particular organism.
From the German word for environment. But wait, there is more. In particular it denotes the part of those surroundings that an animal can sense and experience. It’s perceptual world. For instance a tick cares about body heat, the touch of hair, etc., in its search for mammalian blood. It doesn’t care about other stimuli and probably doesn’t know they exist.
