My dictionary waxes poetic about punk rock before getting down to the definition of the noun that's on my mind: a worthless person, a criminal or a hoodlum, or an inexperienced young person. The noun is accompanied by a related verb and adjective. As to origin, the dictionary says only that it comes from the late 16th century and in the archaic sense meant a prostitute.

Being weird, I like to play with words, so I often find myself saying things like 'poung yunks', switching the beginning consonants.

I see there's also a diminutive, which would make a really great put-down: punkling. So low it doesn't even make the grade to punkdom.

A punk is also a smoldering stick used to light the fuses of fireworks.

As an adjective, "punk" also describes the aroma of such a smoldering stick.
