Invocation of evil spirits.

It antonym is theurgy.

It traces to Greek goeteia, then up to Latin goetia, to French goétie. It relates to an old Serbian gudeti "to fiddle" and govoriti "to speak", and appear in Sanskrit as jogU "singing praise".

I'm reading Montague Summers again and you just trip over these little gems. I have found this is a rare word, but this could be because it describe things that are better left alone. I looked into some of my bible books and could not find it.

I've seen this here, read it many times, looked it up several times, and still can't make it stick in my feeble fallible mind. I keep trying to make something out of the -ety of piety and the go of, well, go. It doesn't go.

Sad that the invocation of evil spirits lies at the root of говорить/govorit', to speak. Maybe I should shut up now? :)
