Sultry

Someone on my FB page just asked why "sultry" applies both to Rita Hayworth and a sultry day. Comments?

I'd also like to mention it's a pretty song, especially sung around a campfire by young teens. Been there at youth camps many times. After awhile you can do without it as happens to most such songs, although it's worth a re-visit now and then.

It's nice to know you missed someone. Gives hope that if I hang around awhile then disappear, someone may notice.

To be very specific, I've most heard renege used in contract bridge. If hearts are led, everyone is required to play a heart, whether it's to their advantage or not. Part of the skill in the game is using this requirement as leverage to gain the advantage and keep track of how many cards are left. I...

Surprised to find out about mummers in Philly. I've only heard it associated with Mardi Gras in NOLA or elsewhere in S LA. It can especially bring to my mind the African-American parade of fantastic Indian (Native American) attire, complete with magnificent headdresses.

My experience with the word comes from my philosophy and theological backgrounds, specifically to do with arguments and logic. I remember such statements as "this results in self-stultification." In other words, it contradicts itself - at least in that context.

I sometimes use the abbreviations u r to save time and for ease, especially in texting and on iphone. It also saves space when limited to 140 characters in texting or on Twitter. For a good while in emails I drove peoplee nuts by using y instead of u, which made more sense to me as an abbreviation.

How dare the Tennessean refer to "down here." In Louisiana we consider those people as Yankees. And frog gigging is less refined. You merely cut a four or five foot branch and sharpen the point. As a kid we didn't slosh in the swamp, but prowled around a creek or farm pond. I was surprised...

Moue

I've always heard two syllables, moo- ay. I admit I've read it more than heard it, but that's my impression.

Never

I frequently hear the word used as a substitute for "no." "Never" in that case means "absolutely not," "no chance," and often stands alone. "Did you do that?" "Never."

Language and thought

I've long heard that language influences thought, but i'm not sure how that works. I've studied formally Latin, Greek, Hebrew, German, and Spanish, but only Hebrew seems radically different in thought. Hebrew OT does seem radically different in thought and logic, but not the others. Some insist Gree...

this is over a year later from an ipad. For whateve it's worth, on iphones and ipads one double spaces at the end of a sentence, and it automatically adds the period. I just added a space aft the period, which could make some of you happier. On the other hand, the touch screen has a tendency to add...

suite

Suite can apply to hotel rooms, office space, or even software. But whence cometh it and why? And does "sweet" merely exist as a coincidence or did it diverge from a common root somewhere in the era when Shakespeare was spelling his name in multiple ways?
