Another common redundancy is tree, e.g. oak tree, fir tree. (German likewise can suffix baum to the type of tree.)
Also -time, e.g. in (the) springtime.

Re: Sublime
Wiktionary gives the verb sublime as a synonym of sublimate . And here is what it says about sublimate : http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sublimate#Verb According to this, it can be used either transitively or intransitively to refer to a solid-to-gas change. The 'purification' meaning (which would be...

Re: Sublime
Thanks. I am not a chemist. But I thought it odd that two opposite processes (without reversal) should share the same word! See, for example, Wikipedia (which allows the Merriam Webster meaning as an alternative), ThoughtCo chemistry dictionary, Sciencenotes.org chemistry dictionary, and Collins Eng...

Re: Sublime
Meaning: 1. To change something from a solid state to vapor or vice versa, usually in order to purify it. I checked the meaning, and it seems that "or vice versa" is incorrect. The reverse process (a change from gas directly to solid) is called deposition , or (less commonly) desublimatio...

Re: Alternative Meaning of Defenestration
Actually, the structure of the word tells me that the correct meaning to be associated with this construction de-fenestr-at-ion should be "removal of the windows from", based on de- "un-, remove" + fenestr- "window" + - at , a verbalization suffix, + - ion , a nominali...

The association between 'luck/destiny' and 'star' is also found in disaster.Mazzal was borrowed (and never returned) from Akkadian manzaltu, mazzatum "position of a star", the noun from the verb izuzzu "to stand".

Re: Onymous
I think the reason that the word is widely ignored is that "an onymous..." sounds too much like "anonymous".
"Onymous" also sounds like a humorous back-formation, like "gruntled", "couth" and "kempt".

They overlap in meaning, but are not always synonymous. You can commend (praise) a person without recommending them to anyone; and you can recommend something (as the best available) without particularly admiring it.Is commend any different from recommend?

Yes – "Word" rhymes with "bird".The last two words in the fourth line and last I have always heard as
"The Word".
That still seems more appropriate to me than "the world".
Does it seem so to anyone else?

Re: Recreation
Note that recreant looks as if it comes from the same Latin verb as recreation, but it does not – it comes from Medieval Latin recredere. (French turns both Latin present participle endings -ans and -ens into -ant.)
