Re: Growler

It's also used to refer to (at least in the UK, probably Oz) what might be referred to as a lady garden  Then again pretty much everything seems to lead back to that or the male equivalent  I occasionally get a growler from the alehouse I frequent. It's a cardboard sort of milk carton th...

Re: Abseil

Maybe it's not in the spirit of 'real' abseiling but as a planned activity it has all sorts of safety ropes attached; I admit I was terrified doing it, but I knew there was no real danger.

The climate however seems to be causing some consternation...

Re: Abseil

It's pretty mainstream in the UK. I've abseiled, my kids have learned such skills in scout groups etc - not on cliffs TBF but on climbing walls. It's fun. As for figurative uses there is a common one here - abseiling down the climate cliff. Though I understand my US friends are generally skeptical o...

Re: Dysmorphic.

The underlying meaning is malformed - I guess you might describe a legislative body as malformed if it was composed of elements that did not help it do the work it was supposed too? For example a legislative body intended to help the populace made up of businessmen that wished to profit from that po...

Re: Burke

Very daring Dr G!

One thing I've never understood is why berk is pronounced like Burke but is derived from (so I've always understood) Berkeley Hunt (pronounced like Barclay Hunt).

The warmth of the sun in winter.

Hey damoge, think the idea was if we drank a foy to him he'd no longer be operational as he'd be away to other callings - hence the never rather than ever :D

Re: Concatenate

I've only heard of catenate used alone with respect to chemistry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catenation It does have the meaning of chain or join, but for some reason in my computer science experience only concatenate is used - I don't know of any languages using the non con- version. I certainly...
