"Today the US is now the greatest country in the spread of the coronavirus"
Lol, not quite sure of the meaning there? The most grotesquely incompetent at dealing with it, therefore the 'greatest' at spreading it?

Re: Spoonerism
This is one of my favourite geeky web cartoons, however this strip is not for the easily offended. Please don't blame me if you read this and are of that ilk:

However for those who enjoy darker humour it is quite amusing

Entertaining persiflage all, thanks. I like this version of the macaronic verse :D : Darkibus nightibus Nota lamporum Boyibus kissibus Sweet girlorum Girlibus likabus Wanta someorum Pater puellibus Enter parlorum Kickabus boyibus Exibus doorum Nightibus darkabus Minus lamporum Climbibus fencibus Bre...

That's quite offensive David. Everyone knows we have cellar temperature beer, not warm beer.
I must admit a properly poured pint will be on my list of priorities fairly shortly...

Re: Testimonialize
Agreed David, I'd definitely bin this clumsy oaf of a word. To be honest it makes me think of some kind of genital mutilation.
Thug: "I'm gonna testimonialise you!"

Re: Misgender
On the subject of greatest people, they are often the most flawed. Isaac Newton is a hero for anyone who, like me, is fascinated by maths. Horrible chap by many accounts, and wasted most of his life on occult studies. His interesting work was done over a couple of years while he was essentially on l...

I was interested in this quora link that attributes the preference against the singular they to one Bishop Lowth. Warning, colourful language. https://www.quora.com/Why-do-people-use-they-which-is-plural-after-everyone-which-is-singular/answer/Franklin-Veaux?ch=10&share=90bae67c&srid=df4v It...

Re: Misgender
A fairly satisfactory justification, Dr G, certainly good enough for me :) Are you trying to say I'm a professional David? :D My expertise is more ... just online stuff TBH but I'm certainly interested in practical language usage. I think the Spivak pronouns are interesting, at least, and I agree wi...

Re: Misgender
I'm going to say that I don't have any particular beef with the singular they - it may be mildly clumsy, but life's a bit short for such my concern to be truly aroused by such. The American Dialect Society even crowned it their word of the decade. https://www.dw.com/en/singular-they-crowned-word-of-...

Re: Misgender
A good word indeed. My cousin has often been misgendered by our family. She is a strapping 6'4" smelly, hairy person, born a man, who has become a woman officially. It's hard to actually get the name right when you knew them as something else for many years despite your best intentions! :D She ...
