I wonder how this works in Mexico, I heard an American Woman retort with an angry look (more honest than sarcasm, I think), "Senhora" when addressed as a "Senorita". This happens (or used to happen) all the time here as well. Anyway, people don't seem to be using senhorita that ...

In Latin, the initial [dh] became [f], producing Latin facere "do, make" from which we get English factory and French faire "do, make".
And Portuguese fazer, Spanish hacer, Italian fare, Romanian face, Catalan fer.

Migratory

I always thought migratory was pronounced MIH-gruh-to-ree (maybe because of minatory?), but today I came across my-GRAY-to-ree in a German-English dictionary. I was shocked to see my-GRAY-to-ree and looked it up in www.merriamwebster.com and found MY-gruh-to-ree, but no my-GRAY-to-ree. Maybe...

There is one greek word γκαντέμης (gantemis) that its root is form two English words.
I see it now. I think your transliteration misled me. I would have written ga(n)demis, then we'd all have known sooner.

I just listened to the doc's interview. Why so short :?: I had downloaded Windows Media Player 11 (I think) and thought that might help me listen to the radio show, and it did! Contrary to what I thought, the doc sounds like a very nice guy. I always imagined him much more serious. Don't ask me why....

And why would our four bears have done that, since other Euro languages* did not?
I wonder how four bears originated the rest of us. The must have been at it all day long.

dassent, dassn't

From Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage : Safire 1984 quotes a correspondent who uses the spelling dassent and another who wonders if it shouldn't have been dassn't . This contractoin - from dares not , apparently - was common in the 19th century and the early 20th (theDictionary of Ameri...
