Re: Mither

Cheers Doc, and great quote - though it sounds more Geordie (from Newcastle) than Lakeland when I read it in my head!

Re: Wimple

Wimpy are still present in the UK, but rather few and far between, and down-at-heel to boot (in less desirable locations etc.). Not sure what went wrong for them!

Re: Inoculate

I've not seen (or maybe noticed) this with a single n spelling before - it's normally innoculate in the UK at least. Unless I'm going mad, quite possible.

Re: Cuckold

Heavily used as an insult by the 'alt-right' supporters of your current president, I have noted, e.g. cuckservative, used to refer to old-fashioned, non-extreme, not openly racist conservatives.

Re: Morass

Hey, they were big when I was little. I don't listen to them now. This song is good though and may help explain their popularity at the time, in a morass of new wave types:

Re: Morass

Apropos of nothing, this word always reminds me of Marillion and their certainly pretentious lyric to Incubus:

'Sentenced to rejection in the morass of anonymity'

Must mean sometnig. I kind of like the song mind you.

Re: periodic/timely/regular

I don't think there is a specific word. It might depend upon the circumstances - for instance 'irregular', 'at will' or something to indicate 'depending on finances'.

Do you feel this means there is a lack of a word meaning to an erratic schedule?

Bungle

I happened to be listening to Jethro Tull ('Bungle in the Jungle') and noticed this word used in today's Dilbert. Bungling is big I hear these days (not mentioning Brexit or 'emergencies' :D ) so it seems apposite as a suggestion - I couldn't see it having been done anyway.

Re: Hoi Polloi

Nice discussion, thanks all. What I'm getting is that English, a very inconsistent language at the best of times, is especially inconsistent when it comes to borrowings. It's stubbornly inconsistent in almost every case, especially in it's inconsistency. Never try to pin down my methods! is it's bat...

Lol was that whole post written for the pun in the last line? Never mind, it was laced with your usual good humour...

Ah, those innocent days when a scandal was just about a few people doing something wrong, rather than an ongoing entirely corrupt and traitorous administration...I miss those days.

Re: Dollop

I love using this word - it's a sound thing.

Splodge is good too and perhaps more onomatapeic. Not sure about it's Nordic connections...
