Maybe it's not in the spirit of 'real' abseiling but as a planned activity it has all sorts of safety ropes attached; I admit I was terrified doing it, but I knew there was no real danger.

It's pretty mainstream in the UK. I've abseiled, my kids have learned such skills in scout groups etc - not on cliffs TBF but on climbing walls. It's fun. I've only heard of catenate used alone with respect to chemistry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catenation It does have the meaning of chain or join, but for some reason in my computer science experience only concatenate is used - I don't know of any languages using the non con- version. A word most commonly used in programming, it's a useful word for a function along with join and append. The & symbol often represents concatenation.
