Re: No

How do we account for "ναι" (nai), which is "yes" in Greek?

"No" in Greek is "όχι" (óchi).

I guess it's one of the few exceptions!

Re: No

I find it interesting that the PIE word ne was basically preserved in (almost?) all Indo-European languages. On the other hand, its opposite wasn't as lucky. Examples: Germanic yes, ja, Romance si, sim, oui, Slavic da, tak, ano, ...

Does it mean that Euclid (euclidean geometry), Boole (boolean algebra), and many others never "arrived"?!

Re: Verily

The same PIE root produced Slavic vera which means faith. It's also a popular female name just like its English version.

Apparently this word is originally Germanic (like fodder) but came back into English via old French.

Re: Carceral

Since neither jail (or gaol) nor prison presents with adjectives, today's word comes in handy.
There are many occurrences of the word prisonal on the Web, like prisonal system.

Thanks to all! This is why English is such a fascinating and fun language for native speakers and often a horrifying and exhausting trial for those trying to learn it! again, thank you ! Glorious! Hi damoge, It is a fact that mastering English as a foreign language isn't easy, but I am sure that is...

Re: Misgender

Deby, that's a nice way out and I'm sure it can be done in many situations. However it would be very cumbersome to police oneself all the time to use they instead of she or he in every conversation. Maybe our grammar checkers will be eventually modified so that our writing becomes politically correc...

Re: Misgender

This is a reply to David Myer. To be honest I don't know whether Spanish speakers care about this issue; probably some do but I don't know what they propose. I used Spanish as an example because it is more familiar in the English speaking world, and it shows that other languages may have more diffic...

Re: Misgender

This discussion became so heated that I decided to add a bit more. English is not my mother tongue and I always think about analogies in other languages. Gender distinction in English is basically limited to some pronouns. However in Slavic languages verbs and adjectives can have distinct forms depe...

Mead

Mead: alcoholic drink made out of honey, used to be very popular in Eastern Europe. Certainly related to the Slavic word for honey: med (or myed) in Russian, miód in Polish. I guess the word used in Romance languages might also be related: miel in French and Spanish, mel in Portuguese.
