Semiosis v. Semiotics

I just came across the first word, and felt it was odd. It does exist, but my understanding is that it is more about signs in biology, rather than the discussion of signs in language. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter? Do you agree with my take on this, or am I off my rocker? Thank you, Slava

Well, I'm too late. I was just going to post this idea, but it's already there. As it's run through the UN's World Food Program, I believe in it. A couple of clicks a day will add up, if everyone does it. However, there is that old adage about giving someone a fish, or teaching them to fish. Then ag...

Accipitrine

Hawk-like, relating to birds of prey, raptorial (another word to suggest, perhaps?). What is the equivalent for doves? Then we could talk about accipitrine and xxx members of Congress. Oh, wait a minute, we already talk about xxx members of Congress. However, I was thinking of the hawks and doves co...

I was thinking of why the "i" isn't pronounced. The spelling is "persiflage," but the pronunciation guide given ignores the "i," making it a two-syllable word, not the 3 as in my dictionary.

In the odd mis-readings department:

I read Perry's "In Play" bit a bit twistedly. I saw Play, and then read cost as cast. Thus getting, "The play project was dropped when the demersal cast piled up."

Pushing it, I know, but that's what I saw.

"Many of the Japanese bonsai attacks..."

I thought bonsai was the little stunted trees. Or are the two words the same, just with different meanings?

This is interesting. For a couple of reasons. One, I can see the tie-in, sorry, the etymology. Ligature + com, reduced to col. Two, the Russian word for "to file" as in the office sense, is "vshivat'", to sew in. Many Russians still do this, in a literal sense. When I was working...

Verge

We have too few words in V in the GW dictionary. I propose we add this one. Lots of meanings, an interesting noun related to it (verger), and an interesting sound, too.

Converge - two crooks getting together?

Hope you all like this one,

Impugning my veracity will cause me to become pugnatious!

Now, don't go getting too pugnatious, or we might think you're a pugilist.

As in one of my favorite phrases:

to "impugn someone's veracity". Which, I suppose, can also be done with impunity.
