Speaking of incomprehesable street names, in my town everything, EVERTHING is named after a tree, bush, flower or other plant life. That's all right if you are familiar with a wide assortment of plants and how their names are spelled, but tell a new comer that the address they are looking for is on ...

I think the proper names of local places and cities is based on a persons knowledge of the area because of how some things could be pronounced a ton of different ways. And you would think that maybe towns would post the pronunciation of the town along with the town name and population. That would h...

Southern women all love their "daa dees". Even southern men refer to their fathers as "daddy"
We Southern Women happen to love our daddies very much and our mammas, too. So no dissin' our venacular. We speak English just like everybody else. :)

Chicken in the car and the car won't go, And that's how you spell Chicago. My mom (in her 70's) has always pronounced the city name as Shih Car Go with the emphasis on Car. Local pronunciations are a hoot. I mentioned in another thread that I made a trip to England and stayed for quite a while with...

My high school Physics teacher claimed that is Italian grandmother used to say, "You can't fight City Hall, but you can always [euphemism]defecate[/euphemism] on the steps." My kind of grandmother! You gotta learn early how to politic. Oh, no, did I just use a noun as a verb? I think I di...

"carbonated beverage," Reminds me of the rather repressive Junior College that I attended many a long year ago. We of the Psi Phi Club (yes, we were all SF freaks) had posted a notice on the community board that we were having an off campus meeting at a members home. At the bottom of the ...

"mechanic on broad" Reminds me of one of my hubby's favorite Engrish notices, the note card on the inside of his hotel door in Thailand, "Guests are invited to take advantage of the maid service." And I always counter with the very English notice at the entrance to a Service Mer...

My hubby, reading over my shoulder, wants to know if "reintarnation" is coming back as a redneck.

Yeah, let's just make sure the melting pot doesn't boil over and all go to pot. I always prefered the image of a stew pot to a melting pot. I don't think that we melt down into into a sticky fondue, but harmonize into a savory stew where our indivudual ingredents are still recognizable, but our sum...

What really gets to me is using the local names of Interstates rather than their numeric designation when reporting traffic news. In Houston there is the Gulf Freeway, the Southwest Freeway, the Katy Freeway, the Loop, the Beltway, etc., which only have meaning if you live and work in Houston. An ou...

"Do What?" can be a request to repeat spoken words, but where I am from, Texas Gulf Coast, the phrase is much more often used to express unexpected negative reaction to something that has been heard, seen or read. As in: Note on Bulletin Board As of next week all workers will be expected t...

All of this reminds me of the visit I made to England where the late afternoon meal was called "tea". It had the feel of dinner, but seemed to be directed towards children. The children would be off to pre-bedtime activities and we would walk down the corner to the pub for a pint and a chu...

Firesign Theatre is filled with puns and other juxtapositions. Ya gotta hear it to really appreciate it. And you've got to hear it over and over again because you won't catch it all the first or tenth time around. Thirty five years later and I still catch puns and historical references and politica...

I Am My Own Grandpa
I remember that song, my dad used to play it all the time. His father and stepmother/stepdaughter have a son who ends up being his half brother and his grandson and great-grandson. Then he and his wife have a baby and it only gets more complicated after that.
