I have a question about today's Goodword. When I noticed that one of the definitions was: 'A direction for the conduct of services in a liturgical text, often distinguished from the text by red print', it made me wonder if this word has anything to do with how some Bibles print the spoken words of Jesus in red. Dr. Goodword, can you help me out with my curiosity?
Thanks,
Susan

Totally able to help:
the text of Jesus in red is the actual word of Jesus, printed
in red so it will stand out on the page and easier to find.
The rubrics in a book: The Roman Church, e.g., uses
a book for Mass: the celebration of the Eucharist
called a 'Sacramentary'. The directions for what the
celebrant/ priest does is printed in small red letters
printed between black prayers/words/greetings/"let us
prays', etc.
At Mass the Priest would be instructed to
"make sign of the cross", at this point; or
"place hands flat over the chalice" at another point while
reciting the blessing: "Lord let your spirit come down
over these gifts".
These gestures would become automatic, but a newer
priest might require the directions. Also some directions
would be in red for ceremonies used only one time a year,
e.g. the blessing of the water at Easter:
"Priest now removes Easter Candle from its stand and
submerges the bottom end of candle into the water"
(thus blessing it).
Blessing of Holy Water: "now sprinkle blessed salt in water".

Rubrics are also all the rage in education these days. We never talked about them when I was teaching college, but my wife, son, daughter and son-in-law are public school teachers and seem to be devising rubrics all the time.
If they got together, they could make a rubric's cube.

Luke~You have been helpful and from what you said I gather they are a publisher's 'highlighter', for assisting people. Thank you
saparris~Rubric's cube? I think we all saw that one coming a mile away...

As discussed elsewhere, brain in a gelatinous mass is
called "head cheese" here, many make it from deer
brains after the season closes. I have two friends who
love it, cannot get close to it myself.
Stay away from the fumes: get some fresh air: we are
expecting 6 more inches of snow: really fresh here.
