Postby Bailey » Thu Feb 15, 2007 6:50 pm

Now I know y'all salt all your conversations, schmoozing, and musings with this lovely word on all occasions but I'd never heard it before. Astounding you say? well.....
Verb 1. gazump - rip off; ask an unreasonable price
fleece, overcharge, plume, rob, soak, surcharge, hook, pluck
extort, gouge, wring, rack, squeeze - obtain by coercion or intimidation; "They extorted money from the executive by threatening to reveal his past to the company boss"; "They squeezed money from the owner of the business by threatening him"
cheat, rip off, chisel - deprive somebody of something by deceit; "The con-man beat me out of $50"; "This salesman ripped us off!"; "we were cheated by their clever-sounding scheme"; "They chiseled me out of my money"
2. gazump - raise the price of something after agreeing on a lower price
cheat, rip off, chisel - deprive somebody of something by deceit; "The con-man beat me out of $50"; "This salesman ripped us off!"; "we were cheated by their clever-sounding scheme"; "They chiseled me out of my money"

What I want to know is there a gerund version? Can I gazump something, and having gazumped can we say I'm a gazumper? This word, Ahem! just cries out to be a Word-of-the-day!

Hmmmmm....

I've only heard it in the phrase "... out the gazump stump ..." which has the same meaning as "... out the wazoo ...." as in "He had money coming out the gazump stump." In this instance it seems to be a form of intensification by repetition of the final syllable. (I know there's a word for that somewhere ...)

And I thought this was the sound an archer makes with his/her arrow...

Bailey, interesting approach to definition, where examples are given without actually using the word.. does this mean there's no way to use it?

As for one who 'zumps, I'd go with gazumpeur.
Stop! Murder us not, tonsured rumpots! Knife no one, fink!
