Christingle

Postby Audiendus » Sun Dec 27, 2015 7:59 pm

Christingle

A symbol of Christ as Light of the World, consisting of an orange decorated with (a) fruits and/or sweets, (b) a red ribbon or paper frill, and (c) a lighted candle. The orange represents the world, and the decorations on it represent the earth's fruits and seasons, the blood of Christ, and Christ's Light respectively. It is a feature of Christingle services for children, held at Advent, Christmas or Epiphany.

The tradition originated in the Moravian Church in the 18th century, but has recently become popular in the United Kingdom.

The derivation of the 'ingle' suffix is uncertain.

Thanx, it's a new word for me. As for -ingle, I would think of mimicking jingle, Kris Kringle, or the like.

Does anyone recall the word for the, Spanish I believe, Christmas orange completely covered with cloves?
