chivalry - cavalier

Postby gwray » Wed Apr 12, 2017 10:07 am

I was intrigued that the word chivalry has origins of horsemanship. Cavalier, with similar origins, has a very different meaning.

Too lazy to verify tonight, but the cavaliers were horsemen and presumably brave in their derringdo, leading to cavalier behavior in which they adopt a devil-may-care attitude.

Re chivalry, think of the knight in shining armor.
