I was intrigued that the word chivalry has origins of horsemanship. Cavalier, with similar origins, has a very different meaning.
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver Proverbs 25:11

Too lazy to verify tonight, but the cavaliers were horsemen and presumably brave in their derringdo, leading to cavalier behavior in which they adopt a devil-may-care attitude.
