I guess it's a matter of choice. I have a friend from China whose name is Peixin. She says Peyk-sing (or something close). Everyone else, including her hubby, calls her Peyzhin.Or Iran's current president Ak-mah-din-e jad. And
the word Mehico. We were always taught Chilay for the
country, so I bristle at Chilly.
And there's also the Chinese. Xaioping (?) X is SH, I
think. Beiping, Beijing, Bejing ????
And here in the Plains: Missourah, or Missouri?
Likewise, there is a small town near me called Clinton. The Clinton-born folks say Clinnon, while everyone else pronounces it the way Bill and Hillary do.
And what do you do with Peru, which is pronounced Pe-du in Peru?
