Early on people were calling them Nikes , not Nik-ees, two
syllables. It took a while for the name itself to catch on.

It might have just been a local thing, now that I
think about it. It was kind of a competition thing
between kids where I taught: that's for sure.
One kid liked Adidas, another Nikes, and then there
were "Roos" with the pocket. I remember correcting
kids as to the pronunciation of Nikes.
