Re: Dilemma/dilemna
There seems to be a community of dilemna spellers. I never noticed it until this latest posting. It could put one in a dilemma about whether to spell the word dilemma or dilemna. i suggest we agree on the overwhelming choice of dilemma.

Re: Dilemma/dilemna
Are you suggesting a committee as they have in
France and Sweden, for instance, who have
oversight on the language?
The one in France a number of years ago was very
upset over the frequently used "le weekend", and
met and then issued the decree it would henceforth
be "le semaine fin".

Re: Dilemma/dilemna
I would never suggest a watchdog group over the English language such as the one France has over French. Language is a living thing and must live free. Having spent a lot of time in Montreal, I am familiar with the Language Police they have there. At least once a week when I was there someone got arrested for disrespect of the French Language. I asked a cousin, a Francophone who has translated the Bible from French to Haitian, about the quality of French spoken in Montreal. He opined that French Canadians speak French about on a par with Haitian Creole. He may have been a little harsh in his opinion.

'arrested for disrespect of the language".....I cannot
imagine that happening here. I could recommend, however,
about 100 people without giving it a second thought, and
many of them are in the media.

Re: Dilemma/dilemna
As a result of a remark made by someone on another forum, I did a search on dilemma vs. dilemna and was surprised to discover how many people were actually TAUGHT to spell d-i-l-e-m-n-a.
I am always aghast at the things that are taught by the teachers.
M. aghast-at-the-hilton Bailey. ( no one will get this one)

Re: Dilemma/dilemna
I get it Bailey66. "M. aghast-at-the-hilton" = "I'm a guest at the Hilton." I'm, glad you pulled this old Good Word chestnut out of the fire that is now in the cloud. We have had years of fun with it.
I have been on the horns of many a dilemma in my day.
