In the Scots and Northern English dialects, pawky means "shrewd" or "having a mocking or cynical sense of humor." It is traced back to the 17th century, but its history beyond that is unknown.
Pawky is a wonderful word that could serve general English speech very well. I'll be attentive to the opportunity to use it!

I've read this one several times over these months, and still can't make myself remember what it means. I always get a sense of 'paltry', 'insufficient', or such thoughts. Fun word, though.
