Viable

Postby William Hupy » Fri Nov 10, 2017 10:18 am

We grabbed this from French, which inherited this from Latin...but wait, there’s more. The PIE root gwei, means, not surprisingly, to live.

Curiously, at least to me, PIE gwei also became bio-, as in biology and all those other such words. It also turns up as the zoo- of another family of words, like zodiac. Fitting for a word that means life, eh?

Then, whence "viaduct" ("vydock" in Balamerese)? Or just "via"?

That's from PIE wegh-, which also became 'way'. Touched upon in the treatment of impervious. Viaticum, invoice, and devious/deviate/deviant took the same path, too.
